Nick Welby, CEO of the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply (CIPS), has resigned with immediate effect citing unforeseen personal circumstances, leaving the door open for a new interim appointment.
In an official email to CIPS members, Alison Barto, Chair of CIPS’ Global Board of Trustees, addressed the sudden resignation, thanking Welby for his contribution and focus on the development of the future CIPS strategy.
The statement confirmed that the recruitment process for a permanent CEO will begin in early 2024 with an unnamed interim leader set to fill the gap in the meantime.
Barto said: “In speaking to Nick, he not only asked me to pass on his huge thanks to all at CIPS – staff, members and customers, who made him extremely welcome but to restate his passion for what CIPS and its membership contribute to the global procurement and supply profession. He will remain an advocate and supporter moving forward.”
London-based Welby, former procurement head at Imperial Tobacco, originally took on the role in an interim capacity before becoming permanent just eight weeks later.
Welby succeeded former CEO Malcom Harrison, who filled the top role for four and a half years before his rapid exit in March 2023.
