About the NIGELS.

Winning a NIGEL – the PASA Award for excellence – is a prestigious recognition of best practice procurement, bolstered by the fact that the winners are reviewed by the audience of peers at the PASA annual Premier ConfeX event.

Entries in the three categories are considered by the PASA judging panel, Chaired by Paul Rogers FCIPS. Three entrants are shortlisted for each award and invited to showcase their submission LIVE to the plenary ConfeX audience.

These three finalists in each category present their 10-minute case study in front of the PASA ConfeX plenary audience of peers, who benefit from seeing nine rich case studies showcasing best practice procurement.

Winners voted by peers.

Procurement peers in the audience conduct a live vote for the three eventual winners on the conference app.

Not only are the winners judged against their peers’ efforts in competition, but also against a minimum standard for excellence defined by our esteemed judging panel of procurement experts from across the region and across the profession.

Why enter?

These awards are an excellent way to:

Recognise excellence in our profession

Encourage good leadership qualities from your team

Improve your presentation skills sharply

Showcase great stories about procurement, from which others can learn

Contribute to a great event in memory of someone who made a difference

In honour of our founder.

PASA’s founder Nigel Wardropper, always took a personal hand in the PASA awards process, the presentations and the shortlisting. He cared that procurement as a subject constantly moved forward – that it was innovative, practical and, most of all, achieved real results.

These principles have been enshrined into the awards process for the future as a memorial to Nigel who passed away suddenly in October 2020.

Award categories and how to nominate.

The Best Procurement Project Award 2024 – Public Sector.

Recognition for aligning defined value delivery of a particular project in a measured, responsible and professional way. This award category addresses the success of the procurement function in delivering a specific procurement project in a timely delivery of value aligned with the priorities of the organisation and a wide range of its stakeholders. This may involve understanding the organization's objectives and business priorities and then aligning responsible value delivery to those priorities. In addition, it may involve consulting with stakeholders to find out what they regard as value from the procurement process. This category also weighs the delivery of strong and timely outcomes from the procurement process including compliance, savings, risk, terms, ESG goals and other aims within the context of assurance of supply. This category recognises entries from the public and not-for-profit sectors.

The Best Procurement Project Award 2024 – Private Sector.

This category also weighs the delivery of strong and timely outcomes from the procurement process including compliance savings, risk, terms, ESG goals and other aims within the context of assurance of supply. This category recognises entries from the private sector.

The Most Improved Procurement Team Award 2024.

This award recognises the greatest improvement in procurement team capability – through people, process, technology, strategic, organisational or cultural improvement- or just good leadership, specifically recognisable in the previous year. Your submission is not for the ‘best’ procurement team – but for the most improved; considering the baseline and current achievement of the team. This award is a continual award, presented each year solely by PASA Managing Director and Nigel’s wife Lesley Wardropper and always remains unsponsored. It reflects Nigel’s strong passion that relative improvement is a greater prize than scale or inherited corporate capability. A donation of all entry fees is doubled each year by PASA and donated to The Heart Foundation in memory of Nigel. This category can recognise any procurement team of any size and any length of tenure.

The nine shortlisted entries will be notified as quickly as possible after 23rd September 2024. Those entries not shortlisted will receive notification by Friday 4th October 2024 at the latest.

Each shortlisted entry, as a finalist, will be invited to present a short 10-minute case study presentation at the Premier ConfeX covering the key attributes of their entry and encapsulating why they think their entry might win a ‘NIGEL’.

The 11th Annual PASA Premier ConfeX main plenary session is on Wednesday 16th October 2024 – LIVE @ Flemington Racecourse Conference Centre in Melbourne. The award winners are revealed, presented and photographed on stage on Thursday 17th October around 3pm.

Entrants are responsible for their own travel costs to Melbourne but will receive free tickets to attend the entire PASA conference on 16/17th October for their entry party of up to 6 people.

All finalists will receive a memento certificate and a copy of the photographs from the occasion. It is possible judges, on occasion, might also cite some “honourable mentions” from entries that were not shortlisted.

The three actual PASA award winners receive an engraved trophy. Most winners of a NIGEL post their win on their LinkedIN profile and on their resume and proudly display their trophy in their office or place of work.

It is likely that PASA will invite winners and/or finalists entries to re-present their case study at future PASA events. In this respect, the material presented must be available to the public domain and appropriate for general public consumption. At least one winner is likely to be asked to join the judging panel for 2024.

Each PASA Award has its own nomination form. You need to complete a form for each Award category you enter. You may self-nominate.

  1.  Read the evaluation criteria! Address the evaluation criteria explicitly as Judges award marks against this framework.
  2. Signpost your submission with headings as this helps the judges navigate your document … aim for brevity
  3. Be honest about challenges and barriers
  4. Please do not include confidential commercially-sensitive information
  5. If you engaged external support, such as a consultancy, state what was their role and what was your role. If you worked with a supplier, perhaps get them to contribute part of the content
  6. The judges will score content not (just) presentation. Bullet points (like this) are fine
  7. Not all initiatives succeed, but if you can provide evidence of results that would help; a testimonial, quantified results, percentage improvement etc
  8. In assessing the award, quite generally, the judges will be considering elements such as:
  • The complexity of defining ‘value’ to the organisation
  • The business context
  • The stakeholder issues/challenges and their management through the project
  • The outcome and how this met the needs of key stakeholders
  • The ingenuity involved in designing the approach
  • Relative improvement in the team is considered not just the level of achievement in itself
