The cone of silence, or limited supplier engagement has been traditionally used to protect the integrity of the procurement process. If not employed correctly, however, it can hinder effective market engagement, leading to poor procurement outcomes. So, what practical ways might procurement officers engage with the market throughout the procurement lifecycle while still maintaining probity standards?

In 2012, there was around 133 identified Indigenous owned businesses on Supply Nation’s Indigenous business directory. Today there are over 6,000!
Also, in 2012, $6m in Commonwealth government contracts went to Indigenous businesses. The first year of the IPP in 2015-16 delivered $356m in contracts and it is now consistently achieving over $1 billion each year.
These figures show a vibrant and diverse economic environment for First Nations businesses which has flow on impacts to communities in terms of Indigenous employment opportunities and the breaking down of social and economic barriers. Yet, there is more to do … so what can we do to achieve more and to focus on impact in 2025-26?

Over 1.5m Aussie organisations have access to the PEPPOL e-invoicing in their existing software, and many are not aware, or know how easily existing software can start using eInvoicing. Recent Australian Government Budget included eInvoicing for a further 4 years, signalling Australia’s intent for eInvoicing adoption across the whole economy to combat email payment scams, better supplier experience, faster payments and easier Payment Times Reporting.
Beyond closing the tax gap, many countries are moving to eInvoicing to enhance international trade and fight against international tax fraud as well as efficiency benefits.
