22 procurement core skills for 2030

future core skills

What are the 22 core procurement skills that procurement professionals need to master by 2030? Tanya Wade, SAP Senior Manager at KPMG España, has compiled a handy grid that covers every aspect.

I see procurement roles shifting faster than most job specs can keep up.

Over the past few years, I’ve worked with teams reshaping what “great” looks like in modern procurement. Not just the job titles, but also the capability stacks, and I see a clear pattern:

  • Roles asking for “cost savings” still dominate job ads, yet the top performers are the ones influencing ESG, AI integration and value chain risk
  • Soft skills now appear in seven out of 10 senior job descriptions, but most organisations still don’t assess them properly in hiring
  • AI tools are here, but what’s missing is the human skill of knowing when to trust them and how to guide them

So, I mapped what I’m seeing in hiring trends, team capability gaps and the real work behind transformation into one visual:

The Procurement Skills Grid for 2030

It splits skills into four zones:

  • Core: Strategic, proven, still growing
  • Future-ready: Fast-rising, not yet embedded
  • Steady: Useful but won’t move the needle
  • Out-of-focus: Being automated, offshored or deprioritised

And here are some takeaways:

  • AI collaboration (prompting, reviewing, co-piloting) is becoming a must, not in the future, but right now
  • PO and invoice management will be fully automated in most mid-to-large organisations by 2027
  • “Lowest price wins” thinking is still being used but rarely rewarded

This chart reflects what’s actually happening inside procurement teams, not what’s trending on panels or webinars.

Would you move anything? What doesn’t sit right? How does this line up with what you’re seeing in your team or your hiring pipeline?
