HOW TO… Improve Your Hiring Strategy

The recruitment industry can be a tough business. When you are looking for ways to improve your recruiting strategy, it’s time to get creative. Through the use of social media, employee referral programs, text messaging marketing and more, you can reach the job candidates that companies want to hire.

Use Social Media to Your Advantage

Social media is an ever-changing landscape that gives you the opportunity to share job opportunities for little or no money. When your budget is tight, you can still share on social media and use it to your advantage. The candidates you want for potential jobs are likely spending time on social media.

  • Learn how to utilize social media to get the most out of your advertising budget.
  • Use social media to engage with communities representing job candidates.
  • Be creative with your posts by posting relevant articles and images (infographics).

Host an Event for Job Seekers

While you can set up at a job fair, potential employees are going to be looking at all of the companies who are also there with a both. When you host your own event, jobseekers will be able to talk with you exclusively. Eliminate your competition right from the start by hosting your own event. Be clear on social media what types of candidates you are searching for to avoid an abundance of jobseekers who don’t have the skills needed.

Set Up an Employee Referral System

When you’ve done the hard work of finding wonderful employees, an employee referral program allows your already great workforce to refer new employees to you when a job opportunity opens up. When your employees are part of the hiring process, the atmosphere within your company is going to be productive and stable.

Your employee referral system should:

  • have clear parameters that state when and how a bonus will be paid.
  • reward for a hired referral with time off or a financial bonus.
  • thank your employee for a great referral and keep them in the loop during the hiring process.

Use Text Messaging to Your Advantage

Send recruiting messages to groups you have set up as part of your text messaging campaign, and you will reach a wide, interested group of candidates in an instant. Text messages are read within a few minutes, and speed is one of the ways you are going to be able to reach the top talent first. Find a text messaging platform so that you can set up messaging lists based on specific interest in various jobs. You’ll have the ability to attract job seekers through text messaging and reach the right candidates when a new job opportunity comes up.

Volunteer in the Community

Give your employees the opportunity to make a difference in the community by setting up a volunteer opportunity in the community. Find a nonprofit in town that needs help with a particular project or event. Allow employees to volunteer and provide paid time off for the volunteer work your employees do. While this will cost you money in employee wages, you won’t be simply providing the nonprofit with a cash donation. You’ll establish a presence in your community and be helping a good cause at the same time.

Get Creative With Benefits

When the market is saturated with jobs, it becomes necessary to stand out among your competition. One way to do this is to offer a creative benefits package. Look at the ways you offer vacation or sick time to your employees. Consider parental leave for either gender, and understand that attracting great employees means having a decent benefits package. If an employee doesn’t need insurance coverage through your company, offer a cash incentive for not taking health benefits. This allows you to save money but rewards the employee at the same time. You can consider offer instant pay, to be accessed when necessary by your employees.

To find the best employees, use all the tools at your disposal. Maximize job opening exposure on social media, add text messaging to your marketing strategy and don’t be afraid to get creative with the benefits you offer.
