Effective Networking 2017

Author: Nigel Wardropper

‘Networking’, what does it mean to you? Is it simply about meeting new people or is it about benefits you can obtain through your new found contacts?

When we asked current members of PASA CONNECT what they value most about their participation in the programme, the word ‘networking’ frequently comes up. But what do they mean when they talk about networking?

If we dig a little deeper, we see what they are really talking about is having the opportunity to do all or some of the following:

  • Build valuable relationships with peers with similar roles, responsibilities and interests
  • Gain exposure to new ideas and better or different ways of doing things
  • Identify solutions to their current challenges
  • Obtain real market intelligence, quickly and efficiently
  • Benchmark themselves, their organisation, methods and capabilities
  • Acquire new strategies, skills and techniques that make them more effective
  • Gain access to resources that can assist them to be more effective and productive
  • Enjoy the sense of belonging to a peer group or community that faces similar challenges

If we use these criteria as the benefits that can be obtained through networking, then it’s obviously about far more than just meeting new people. All of the above combine to make us more effective and productive, helping us grow both personally and professionally, and making us more valuable to our employer.

PASA CONNECT provides a platform for members to come together to collaborate, by learning with and from each other, to gain exposure to new and different strategies and tactics, and to build real ‘value networks’.

Here are just a few examples of what our existing members are saying about their participation in PASA CONNECT Round-tables:

“I have found the PASA CONNECT round tables to be an engaging, informative and thought provoking way of looking at varying approaches to procurement. It’s a great opportunity to connect with and learn from other experts in the field, and to identify ways of improving processes and taking a more innovative approach to procurement to continue to create value.”

Tiffany Fillingham, Contract Administration Specialist, Evolution Mining

“I have found it very interesting and exciting to share ideas with other members and see what other companies are doing. Nowhere else do I get the important chance to meet colleagues from other major companies. Attending a PASA CONNECT Round Table has helped me to think out of the box, by sharing experience and gaining exposure to other points of view.”

Julien Thomazo, Procurement Account Lead, Philip Morris Limited

“Having attended the SRM round table through PASA, it was very valuable getting connected with peers from other industries to hear about how they tackle similar SRM challenges that we face in our organisation. The sharing of best practice information in our peer group has allowed us to challenge some of our own tools and process and improve on the way my organisation can partner more closely with our suppliers to drive increased value for our organisation.”

Thomas Tuszynski, Group Category Manager – Food & Beverage, Crown Resorts Limited
